We are pleased to announce this year's winner of the $100,000 John P. McNulty Prize, Dr. Amy Crockett of the Liberty Fellowship.

Amy is being honored for her transformative work that is drastically improving birth outcomes in South Carolina, and influencing the way healthcare is delivered across the nation.

Every year in the United States, more than 500,000 babies are born preterm, resulting in neurosensory and cognitive disabilities, and lifelong disparities in education, health and employment. South Carolina in particular faces stark preterm birth rates—worse than those of Sudan. But at a time when health care costs are soaring, Dr. Amy Crockett is leading an expansion of CenteringPregnancy, an innovative model of group prenatal care that leads to healthier moms and babies and has cut costs across South Carolina. When Amy discovered that the social bonds created in group prenatal care significantly improved the birth outcomes of her own patients, she decided to make it her Fellowship venture to create state-wide access to the model.

CenteringPregnancy dramatically reduces preterm birth rates, eliminates racial disparities in infant health, and slashes neonatal intensive care unit admissions, resulting in state medical savings of more than $7 million. Furthermore, Amy has convinced Medicaid and BlueCross BlueShield to come on board, ensuring that more than 85 percent of pregnant women in South Carolina now have access to it. Crockett’s leadership and research are spurring other states and even countries like Mexico to replicate the model and improve birth outcomes.

She is changing the face of healthcare by influencing insurance and public health agencies to put preventive care first by making it economically sustainable and accessible to patients.

“When we think of complications at birth or infant mortality, we often think about developing countries dealing with abject poverty, weak infrastructure or broken human services. Yet, this is occurring right here in the United States. With CenteringPregnancy, South Carolina & Dr. Crockett are pioneering a model of change that has global applications for women and children everywhere.”  - Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State, Aspen Institute Trustee, and member of the McNulty Prize jury.
