Kidd’s Insider Guide To Aspen: The Great Outdoors Edition

They say people come to Aspen for the winters, but stay for the summers and it’s no surprise why. Aspen has some of the most scenic hikes in the country that allow you to immerse yourself in the beauty of Colorado. This guide will have three local’s favorites that will offer some perfect views of Aspen.

1. Smuggler Mountain – Level of Difficulty Easy: One of the most well-known hikes in Aspen is Smuggler Mountain. Once the sight of Aspen’s most prominent silver mines, the mountain road is now a popular destination for families, dogs, and runners. The full loop extends 14.5, miles but the initial walk is just under two miles. This is a great hike for beginners and offers incredible views of Aspen from the platform at the top of the road. 2. Hunter Creek – Level of Difficulty Medium: If you are looking for a more adventurous trail, check out Hunter Creek. The trail weaves over a river on bridges and planks, before climbing through the trees to a hidden valley, pictured above. This valley is filled with the houses of settlers from the 1800s, which have been preserved by the town of Aspen. Make sure to bring plenty of water and good shoes for the 1.5 mile hike up. 3. The Ute Trail – Level of Difficulty Difficult: Looking for a challenge? Then go no further than the Ute Trail. While it is just over a mile in length, it is a steep climb the entire time and you will rise over 1,000 feet in elevation. While it will be a challenge, the view is spectacular. From the rock outcropping, you will be able to see down the Roaring Fork Valley and to the top of Independence Pass. Once you’re up there, see if you can spot the Aspen Institute!
