To my fellow AGLN Fellows:
Rarely has a moment seemed more primed to test our commitment to the creation of good societies than what is happening in the United States right now. If this is not a time when we, the AGLN network, can stand up, pool our collective resources and thoughts, and support what is right, then when is?
Floyd’s death - forever emblazoned on our conscience in a 9-minute video played on American national television, and in the name of the law - has sparked tremendous unrest in the U.S. However, the problems, not just with race, but with intolerance of all kinds have been simmering beneath the surface for decades, globally. Justice equality around race is a prominent local (i.e. United States) issue, but the implications and consequences of allowing injustice, inequities, and intolerances to continue in a world that is becoming smaller and smaller, by the day, are global.
This is about us.
Who are we?
Who do we want to be - as a people - as a world?
What do we stand for?
So my request is to please stand with me, stand with the people of the United States, and stand with each other - in the world - to be counted as one of those who says the racism, the sexism, the discrimination, the intolerance, the divisiveness, and the intimidation is NOT okay. And make the pledge to yourself that when you hear intolerance you will take that one minute from your life to speak up, and challenge it.
This is not a political statement or position. This is a statement of conscience.
