Title and Organization:
Maria Nelly Rivas is a Board Member and former President at the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) in Nicaragua. She is Cargill’s Corporate Affairs director for Central America, leading public affairs and sustainability programs. Prior to joining Cargill, she was Assistant Resident Representative at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Managua and Latin American coordinator for the United Nations World Tourism Organization, focusing on linking local development the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Before joining the UN, she was Nicaragua's Tourism Minister. Under her leadership, tourism became the top revenue generator for the country. Previously, she was associate director of PRONicaragua, Nicaragua's investment promotion agency. Before joining PRONicaragua, Maria Nelly served as senior strategic media planner at multi- national advertising agency McCann-Erickson in New York City and Buenos Aires. Maria is active as Co-Founder and Board Member at Vital Voices Nicaragua. She holds a BA in communications from Queens College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She resides in Managua with her family. She is a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum, a Fellow of the second class of the Central America Leadership Initiative and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
