Title and Organization:
Javier Olivan is the Vice President of Growth at Facebook. Having joined Facebook over 10 years ago, Javier has been involved in every major company initiative and leads several parts of the business. He oversees all growth efforts, Facebook messaging products, the data science team, the Social Good team, and the product and engineering groups responsible for tools that keep people safe on Facebook. Some of these tools include Amber Alerts, suicide prevention and anti-bullying, Safety Check, and the way that people can report posts and content across all of Facebook. He also works closely with Facebook’s Internet.org efforts working with mobile operators to accelerate the adoption of the internet around the world. When Javier started at Facebook in 2007, he joined the company as the Head of International Growth. At the time, Facebook had fewer than 50 million people using the service and a very small portion of that outside of the US. Over the last decade, Javier and his team have helped the company grow to a community of almost two billion people with more than 85% of those people accessing Facebook from outside the US. He continues to lead this team and help break down barriers for people to connect to Facebook and create communities. Prior to joining Facebook, Javier was a Product Manager at Siemens Mobile where he led a cross- functional team charged with the development and market launch of handset devices. Earlier in his career, Javier worked for NTT in Japan as a research and development engineer and was responsible for developing software that enabled high-quality wireless video transmission to mobile devices. Javier holds a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University and a master’s degree in both electrical and industrial engineering from Universidad de Navarra in Spain. Javier is originally from a small town in the Pyrenees Mountains in Spain, and currently lives in Palo Alto with his family.
