Title and Organization:
Juan Ignacio Martínez Bermúdez is executive president of Joya de Nicaragua S.A., the country’s oldest and most prestigious premium cigar manufacturer. He is also founder and managing director of various Nicaraguan organizations including Madre Consulting, a firm in the creative industry and BIBSA, a company that provides management support to small enterprises. He has led companies in the fuel and energy sector as well as in retail and distribution. Prior to holding his current position, he worked as a business consultant and project director at FIDEG, a socio-economic think-tank in Nicaragua, and served as deputy-editor of the economics journal El Observador Económico. Juan believes in the power of effective organizations to impact the wellbeing of Nicaraguans. He has served on the board of directors of non-profit organizations like FOBECA that works in education, and TECHO. Currently serves as vice-president of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Tobacco, a trade-group of the country’s leading companies in the industry. He earned a master’s degree in management and economics from the London School of Economics, a magister degree in law and economics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and his bachelor degree’s in economics from McGill University. He lives in Managua with his wife and daughter. Juan Ignacio is a Fellow of the thirteenth class of the Central America Leadership Initiative and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
