Title and Organization:
Isaías Montealegre is gastrointestinal surgeon specialized in Bariatric Surgery who has founded the meaning in helping patients who suffer of obesity, to achieve a healthy weight through surgery and through a complete program to teach them how to prevent gaining back the overweight. Isaías is the lead coordinator of the "Center for the treatment of Obesity" at Vivian Pellas Hospital, a project with a vision to treat obesity as a disease and not as a physical characteristic. Through personal experience he has developed a strong political and social conscience that drives him to get involved in civil society work. Isaias has volunteered as electoral observer and as elections poll watcher over the last 20 years. He is currently on the board of director of pro-democracy organization, Hagamos Democracia. His main motivation to create a better world is his family, he's been married for 12 years and has three beautiful daughters "Blessed among women", the youngest, Nelly, is a three-year-old angel born with a neurological disorder that caused her a delayed in her neurological, motor skill development, and profound deafness. This journey took Isaias and his wife Nohelia to experience the lack of specialized services for kids with special needs in Nicaragua, discovering the shocking reality of the struggles of these families, most with low income. Isaías was elected president from 2015 to 2017 of Fundación Escúchame a non- profit organization that helps kids with any kind of hearing loss, providing them with audiological tests, auditory-verbal evaluation and therapy, he has been involved in this organization along with his family since the beginning of their journey with Nelly. Isaías is a Fellow of the fourteenth class of the Central America Leadership Initiative and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
