Carmichael Roberts is founder and managing partner of Material Impact Fund L.P., a fund that seeks out transformative technologies and builds them into enduring companies that solve real world problems. He is also part of the leadership team at Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the $1B+ mission-oriented energy fund backed by Bill Gates and others that is creating companies to address the threat of climate change and long-term sustainability of the planet. Carmichael is also a partner of North Bridge Venture Partners L.P., another early stage venture fund that invests in a variety of topics and industries, including materials. He also serves as co-founder and chairman of Diagnostics For All, a creative hybrid non-profit and for-profit business that is developing paper-based diagnostics for poor and rural populations in developing nations. Prior to his career in venture capital, Carmichael spent over 10 years as an entrepreneur-CEO starting and managing companies in life sciences, electronics and energy. Carmichael currently serves on the boards for the National Venture Capital Association, the Consumer Technology Association and Massachusetts General Hospital Physician Organization. Carmichael is also a trustee of Duke University. In 1999, he was named by MIT’s Technology Review as one of the world’s top 100 young entrepreneurs. Carmichael received his BS and PhD in organic chemistry from Duke University and completed his postdoctoral National Science Foundation Fellowship at Harvard University. Carmichael also has an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management. Carmichael is a Fellow of the 2017 class of the Aspen Finance Leaders Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
