On International Women's Day, it is important to both celebrate the women who are championing social good in the business sphere and to recognize efforts to empower women in business. At the 2016 Resnick Aspen Action Forum, three female business leaders spoke on the importance of using their platforms to promote progress and inclusivity.

One of these leaders was Middle East Leadership Initiative Fellow Lama Al Sulaiman, who has leveraged her position within Jeddah's Chamber of Commerce to get more women involved in the Saudi Arabian workforce, exemplify the positive impact of prioritizing justice in business. In her words, "[c]
hange happened because of the business community, which was powerful and vocal… financial independence gives people power, whether we want to accept it or not.“

Another of these business leaders was China Fellow Dee Poon, whose venture runs with this notion and empowers women throughout the textile industry, from the farm to the factory, by promoting financial independence via microfinance programs. The third business leader, Henry Crown Fellow Sheila Marcelo, also provides millions of women with the opportunity for greater financial independence by using her platform to advocate for caregivers so they may have steady work, benefits, and transparent workplace policies.

It can be difficult to justify prioritizing justice and inclusivity in the business space, where often the emphasis is maximizing profit. But individuals can work to change that paradigm, proving that empowering women and championing social good can ultimately be mutually beneficial for the business community and the world.

Above, watch Lama Al Sulaiman, board member and business developer, Rolaco Holdings; Sheila Marcelo, founder, chairman and CEO, Care.com; Dee Poon, chief branding officer, Esquel Brands and Distribution; and Peter Reiling, executive vice president and trustee of the Aspen Institute; discuss the role business leaders play in social impact at the 2016 Resnick Aspen Action Forum (beginning around 14:47).
