Bio:
Born in Shanghai and raised in Hong Kong, Mr Shum received his tertiary education in the US. He started
his career in private equities in early 1990s, at the beginning of PE industry in Greater China region. He had
experience investing in FMCG, light manufacturing, logistics and consumer services. He invested in the first
NASDAQ listed technology firm from China, which built out the internet backbone network of China.
Joining the entrepreneur rank, Mr. Shum is a serial entrepreneur with experience in technology, financial
investment and real estate development in Greater China region. He developed the largest air cargo logistics
facility in China, Beijing Airport Cargo Terminal. He also led the development of Bulgari Hotel in Beijing.
He also sat on the supervisory board of Ping An Insurance after investing in it in early 2000s.
Mr Shum was also an early pioneer of philanthropy in China starting in early 2000s, gifting extensively both
domestically and internationally. He is an Honorary Trustee of Tsinghua University, a decade long member
of Beijing Political Consultative Conference before retiring in 2016 and a member of the board of Xiu Yuan
Foundation, the publisher of a leading socio economic magazine in China. He is also a current Board
Member of Aspen Institute UK.
Mr. Shum holds a Bachelor's degree in Finance and in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-
Madison in the United States, and is a graduate of the joint-EMBA programme of Northwestern University
(US) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Mr. Shum is a Henry Crown Fellow of
Aspen Institute.
