Tao Zhang is founder and managing director of Dao Ventures, a U.S.-China impact investment, advisory and accelerator group with co-headquartered offices in both China and the United States. Tao is a co-founder of Dao Foods International, Inc., a cross-border impact venture established to introduce plant-based and clean meat in China, which has been selected as one of 15 startups disrupting the global meat industry by The Grocer. Tao is also a co-founder of Ecofroggy International, a social enterprise in China that provides environmental education services and products to China’s primary school students aged 6 to 12. Having entered the curriculum of about 130 primary schools covering nearly 250,000 students, Ecofroggy received a Green Entrepreneur award from China’s SEE Foundation in 2017.
Prior to this, Tao served as Global COO of New Ventures, a center of environmental entrepreneurship housed at the World Resources Institute. In this role, Tao led New Ventures' Global Hub in Washington, DC and its six Local Centers in Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia and Mexico in doubling investments into New Ventures portfolio companies to nearly $400 million. Tao is the lead author of Creating the Chinese Dream and China Crowdfunding Report, two impact investing-related publications. Tao has been a columnist for the Wall Street Journal Chinese, with a focus on how to leverage investing to cure environmental and social ills. Tao received a BA from Beijing Foreign Studies University, an MBA from Wake Forest University, and an MPA from Harvard University as a Mason Fellow. Tao is a Fellow of the third class of the China Fellowship Program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
