Title and Organization:
Ricardo A. Rivera-Cardona is chief business development officer at Somos Community Care. In this position, Ricardo works to transform a fee-for-service system to a value-based payment system for a network of more than 2,500 physicians serving close to 650,000 people in New York City. Previously, Ricardo was the executive director of the Puerto Rico Health Insurance Administration, where he turned a $200 million projected deficit into a $85 million surplus in three years without sacrificing participants’ benefits or quality of service. Prior to this, Ricardo was the president of COSVI, one of the top local health and life insurance companies in Puerto Rico. He also served as secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and, simultaneously, as executive director of the Puerto Rico Trade and Export Company, where he led numerous initiatives to create new companies and jobs and to support existing corporations in scaling and exporting their products and services throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Ricardo has also held the positions of sales and marketing director of ICI Paints, senior brand manager for Eli Lilly, brand manager of Procter & Gamble, and management consultant of Arthur D. Little in Caracas, Venezuela. He earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s degree in engineering management from Cornell University and a master’s degree in health administration from Columbia University. Ricardo is a Fellow of the second class of the Health Innovators Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
