Bio:
Charu is the Deputy Inspector General of police of Anantapur range consisting of Anantapur, Chittoor and Thirupati districts in Andhra Pradesh. An IPS officer of the 1996 batch Charu has served as Asst Supt of police in Pulivendula, Cuddapah district, handling faction feuds, then as Asst Supt of police Eluru, West Godavari district, then as OSD (Officer on special duty) in charge of anti-extremist operations in Medak district where she handled the issue of extremism and rehabilitation of surrendered cadres. She was posted as Commandant 1st Battalion Hyderabad and after that as Supt of Police Prakasam district where she worked with chenchu tribals in educating them about the ills of supporting extremists, bringing tribal social and economic issues into focus and bringing them into the mainstream. She was also posted as Supt of Police Intelligence Security Wing, and then as Supt of Police Nizamabad district. After that she went to the United Nations Mission on deputation for one year to Kosovo in Europe, for peacekeeping in an area torn by conflict between Albanian Muslims and Christian Serbs. Subsequently on return she was posted as Supt of Police Chittoor where she worked for restoration of property rights of HIV affected women and children thrown out of their homes. On being posted to Mehbubnagar as Supt of Police she worked with the chenchu tribals and the fishermen on the river belt. Her community policing initiatives ensured that all the members of the dalams surrendered with all their weapons, without shedding a drop of blood and extremism was rooted out completely. When she was posted as Joint Director Anti-Corruption Bureau her focus shifted to the fight against corruption. Thereafter she went as SP East Godavari to conduct the 2009 general elections, and was posted as Deputy Director Andhra Pradesh Police Academy, where she trained over 1700 Sub Inspectors. On promotion she was posted as DIG Anantapur range where she continues till date. She graduated in English Literature, History and Political Science from St. Francis College for Women in Hyderabad and did her post-graduation in Political Science from Hyderabad Central University. She is a Fellow of the fourth class of Kamalnayan Bajaj FellowshipFellows and the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
