Leslie Maasdorp is Vice President of Brics New Development Bank. Until May 2014 he served as President of Bank of America Merrill Lynch for Southern Africa. Over the past 13 years, Leslie has been active in global investment banking having served as Vice Chairman of Barclays Capital and Absa Capital for 5 years. In 2002 he was the first African to be appointed as International Adviser to Goldman Sachs. Prior to his investment banking career he occupied senior leadership positions in the South African Government. In 1994 after the transition to democracy he served as special adviser to the Minister of Labour. In 1999 he was appointed as Deputy Director General responsible for leading the Restructuring and Privatization program of the Government. Leslie is currently Chairman of Advtech a leading provider of private education in South Africa. He also serves on the Boards of Telkom and HCI, both listed companies on the JSE. Leslie is a member of a think tank of the world economic forum, it's Global Agenda Council on the Future of Telecommunications. He is also a director of the Soros Economic Development Fund, a non profit social investment fund, pioneered by George Soros with a specific focus on Africa. He is a Fellow of the inaugural class of the Africa Leadership Initiative-South Africa and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
