Bio:
Doug Smith has been speaker pro tempore of the South Carolina House of Representatives since 2000 and a representative since 1992. He represents District 32 (Spartanburg). Prior to election as speaker pro tempore, he served as chairman of the Rules Committee; vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee; and chairman of the Constitutional Laws Subcommittee. He continues to serve on the Judicial Merit Selection Commission. Doug has sponsored legislation on property tax relief, welfare reform, educational accountability, life scholarships, judicial reform, government restructuring, truth-in-sentencing, state spending limitations, and school choice, and the Parental Responsibilities Act and Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act. A partner with Johnson, Smith, Hibbard & Wildman Law Firm in Spartanburg, he also serves on the boards of the South Carolina Golf Association and Regions Bank. A graduate of Wofford College and the University of South Carolina School of Law, Doug was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from the Medical University of South Carolina. He is a Fellow of the inaugural class of the Liberty Fellowship Program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
