Bio:
Jo Watson Hackl is a writer, an attorney, and the Founder of Outdoorosity.org. Her novel, Smack Dab in the Middle of Maybe (Random House Children's Books), received the Southern Book Prize and a Publisher's Weekly bestseller. A first-generation college graduate, Jo and her team worked with experienced educators to develop resources to help students increase resilience and improve writing skills, with a focus on at-risk students. Jo also works with educators to incorporate nature into the school day. Jo has presented to over 16,000 students and educators. Working with a neuroscientist and experienced educators, she developed the "Building Grit Kit" (available at www.johackl.com/activities) to help children develop skills to promote grit and resiliency. Jo is a Liberty Fellow and serves as a board member of the Hollingsworth Foundation, the Greenville Center for Creative Arts, and as a mentor to start-up companies through the MIT NEXT Venture Mentoring Service. Jo also serves on the Greenville Technical College Area Commission. She is also a corporate attorney with Wyche, P.A.. Jo has received the Richard Riley Award, the South Carolina Bar Pro Bono Award, the Tommy Thomason Award, the Ruth Nicholson Award, and the Athena Award. Jo received her JD from Yale University Law School and her BA from Millsaps College. She is a Fellow of the third class of the Liberty Fellowship Program.
