Bio:
Sylvia Mathews Burwell is a Distinguished Fellow in Residence at the Sine Institute and was the 15th President of American University in Washington, DC. She previously served in two confirmed Cabinet positions as the Secretary for the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services and Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Barack Obama. Before her appointment at OMB, Sylvia served as President of the Walmart Foundation and led Walmart's Women's Economic Empowerment effort. Before joining the Walmart Foundation, she was President of the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she worked for 10 years and was also the first Chief Operating Officer. During the Clinton Administration she served as Deputy Director of OMB, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Treasury, and Staff Director of the National Economic Council. She received an A.B. from Harvard University and a B.A. from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Burwell hails from Hinton, West Virginia. She and her husband Stephen live in Washington, DC with their two children. She has served on a number of boards both for profit and not for profit and is currently serving on the boards of Kimberly Clark, Guidewell/Florida Blue, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Harvard Board of Overseers. She is part of the Aspen Health Strategy Group and a 2005 Henry Crown Fellow. She has received a number of honors and awards including most recently the Order of the Phoenix from the Government of Greece.
