Sylvia Mathews Burwell is the 15th President of American University in Washington, DC. She previously served as the Secretary for the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services under President Barack Obama. Prior to that, she was Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to which she was confirmed by the Senate on April 24, 2013. From 2012 until her appointment at OMB, Sylvia served as President of the Walmart Foundation. Before joining the Walmart Foundation, she was President of the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she worked for 10 years and was also the first Chief Operating Officer. During the Clinton Administration she served as Deputy Director of OMB, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Treasury, and Staff Director of the National Economic Council. Sylvia is on the boards of the Council on Foreign Relations and GuideWell. She received an A.B. from Harvard University and a B.A. from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Burwell hails from Hinton, West Virginia. She and her husband Stephen live in Washington, DC with their two children. She is a member of the Aspen Strategy Group, the Aspen Institute’s Future of Work Initiative, the Aspen Health Strategy Group, the Aspen Economic Strategy Group, and she is a 2005 Henry Crown Fellow.
