Title and Organization:
Javier joined The Denver Foundation-a community foundation helping individuals, families and corporations deepen the impact they make with philanthropy-in October of 2019 as President and CEO. With a 90+ year history and over $900M in assets, The Denver Foundation is one of Colorado's oldest and largest philanthropic organizations. Prior to this, Javier served as President and CEO of The Miami Foundation. During his 10 years leading the The Miami Foundation, Javier successfully transformed the Foundation's business model and brand and positioned the organization as a prominent leader in the South Florida community. This transformation included the development of several Foundation initiatives focused on driving increased civic engagement: "The Public Space Challenge" has provided over $2M in funding to individuals in the community with an idea for creating or enhancing a public space in Miami and "Give Miami Day," an annual 24 hour on-line charitable giving event that last year raised over $11M for 700 non-profits in Miami. Prior to joining the Foundation, Javier served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Grayling, a multi-disciplinary global public affairs firm. He spent the early part of his career in the public sector as a litigator in the Miami-Dade County Attorney's Office and as Chief of Staff to County Mayor Alex Penelas. Javier also worked as a litigation associate at Holland & Knight. He is active on a number of community and professional association boards including: The Council on Foundations; America's Promise Alliance; Knight Foundation's Miami Community Advisory Board; and the Orange Bowl Committee. Javier graduated cum laude in History and Political Science from Florida State University and earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. He is a 2013 Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
