Title and Organization:
Carl is the Chief Medical Officer of an early stage digital health company, CompanionMx. CompanionMx provides a mobile mental health monitoring system for patients, providers and payers to reduce the burden of mood and anxiety disorders. This is Carl's third start-up out of the MIT Media Lab. He formerly co-founded and served as CEO, Chairman and Chief Science Officer of Innerscope Research, a leading global consumer neuroscience research firm specializing in measuring the emotional connection between brands, products and consumers that was sold to Nielsen in 2015. He stayed on with Nielsen as the Global Chief Neuroscientist for four years. Carl is also chairman of a non-profit dedicated to using neuroscience to reduce racism, polarization and dehumanization known as Beyond Conflict. He is also part-time Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, and Chair of the Board of Advisors for the Endowment for the Advancement of Psychotherapy in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. As a board certified and practicing psychiatrist, he is a member of a number of professional societies including the American Medical Association, the Massachusetts Medical Association, the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society, and the American Psychiatric Association. His other relevant affiliations include membership in the Association of American Rhodes Scholars, the Advertising Research Foundation and the Marketing Sciences Institute. Carl received his MA in psychology and philosophy at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and completed his medical degree with honors at Harvard Medical School. He has extensive training in biological psychology and neuroscience through two National Institute of Health research fellowships, is a sought after lecturer nationally and internationally and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed science journals. Carl is a 2014 Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
