Title and Organization:
Sonia Hassan is associate dean for maternal, perinatal, and child health at Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine, a professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine, director of the WSU Perinatal Research Initiative, and founder and director of both the Center for Advanced Obstetrical Care and Research and Make Your Date, a program to reduce preterm birth, the leading cause of infant mortality. Sonia is co-chair of Michigan’s Infant Mortality Advisory Council. She was co-chair of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s Healthcare Transition Team. Sonia has authored or co-authored over 300 publications and was the lead author of a landmark international trial which demonstrated an intervention that decreases preterm birth. Sonia is the project site manager for the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health on behalf of WSU. Sonia was the Crain’s 13th Annual Health Care Heroes Awardee and Michiganian of the Year by The Detroit News. She was the March of Dimes Michigan Prematurity Prevention Hero Award and is the honoree of the Michigan March of Dimes for 2018. Sonia is a Fellow of the third class of the Aspen Institute's Health Innovators Fellowship.
