Bio:
Sharmi Surianarain serves as the Chief Impact Officer for Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator in South Africa. Sharmi leads on Harambee's impact, learning and systems change agendas, and manages key funder partnerships. Sharmi also oversees Harambee's work in Rwanda and is the chair of the Rwanda Global Business Services (GBS) Growth Initiative Advisory Board, incubated by Harambee to drive the growth of GBS jobs in Africa. Sharmi serves on the Boards of Emerging Public Leaders, which aims to create a pan-African network of public service leaders, and Instill Education, which provides tech-enabled teacher education to teachers across Africa. Sharmi is the founder of Making Caring Count, a social enterprise that aims to build impactful solutions around care work in Africa and has launched a TED talk on the subject of care work. Sharmi holds a B.A. from Harvard University, a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Sharmi is also a singer-songwriter and jazz pianist, with a debut EP titled Lost, released in 2023.
