Bio:
Daveed Gartenstein-Ross is an entrepreneur and scholar with specialized knowledge in violent non-state actors and terrorist groups. He is the founder and CEO of the private firm Valens Global, which has twice been named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s E360 list of the top small businesses in the U.S. In addition to running Valens, he is on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University and Duke University, both of which feature simulations he has designed as stand-alone classes. He has previously held positions with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Google.
Daveed recently led Valens Global’s efforts to support the drafting, threat assessment, and crafting of priority actions for DHS's 2019 Strategic Framework for Countering Terrorism and Targeted Violence, which received widespread acclaim, with the New York Times editorializing that it “focuses unapologetically on right-wing terrorism, particularly white supremacist extremism,” which constitutes “a shift that is both urgently needed and long overdue.” He has also worked on live hostage negotiations, trained members of the armed forces set to undertake dangerous deployments, and advised clients facing physical threats on how to upgrade their security posture.
Daveed is the author or volume editor of over 30 books and monographs, with a new book forthcoming from Columbia University Press this year. Daveed holds a Ph.D. in world politics from the Catholic University of America and a J.D. from the New York University School of Law. Daveed is a Fellow of the Civil Society Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
