Matteo Stefanel is co-founder and CEO of Apis Partners, a private equity investment management firm focused on financial services and fintech companies in growth markets across Europe, Africa and Asia. Apis Partners manages approximately $2.0 billion. Over the past decade, the company and its managed funds have invested in over 40 companies, employing c.a 70,000 people and serving 185m customers in 179 markets. Apis Partners’ philosophy is centered on the concept of "catalyst capital," aiming to generate private equity returns while fostering financial inclusion and social impact. The company has been recognised as 2023 Impact Manager of the Year for Asia and Africa and as the Top ESG performer in Growth PE by International Business Magazine and Orbis respectively.
Prior to founding Apis Partners and until 2013, Matteo was a senior partner at the Abraaj Group, leading FS investments and serving as joint fund manager for large capital private equity funds with a total AUM of $5 billion. Matteo has also held senior roles at MIG (AUM $7bn), serving as a member of the group executive committee, and at Deutsche Bank, where he led the financial institutions group in a number of EMEA regions.
Matteo earned his BA/MA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Queens College, Oxford. He was a member of the WEF’s Global Agenda Council on Financing and Capital from 2012 to 2016. In his free time, he’s a member of the board of the UWC L.B. Pearson College of the Pacific, and chairs its investment committee.
Matteo is married and has three children, a dog and a cat. He loves skiing, sailing and pretending to run.
