Mao Wenchao is a Chinese entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Xiaohongshu (Red), a leading social e-commerce platform. Mao holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and completed coursework at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, where he focused on business and technology. His early career included significant roles at Bain & Company and Bain Capital, where he gained extensive experience in management consulting and private equity. Founded in 2013, Xiaohongshu (Red) has become a major player in China’s social commerce landscape, with approximately 400 million registered users and about 100 million monthly active users as of 2024. The platform seamlessly integrates social media with e-commerce, allowing users to share product reviews and lifestyle content, which drives both consumer engagement and sales. In 2023, Xiaohongshu’s revenue surpassed RMB 10 billion (USD 1.4 billion), reflecting its influential role in the market.
