Matching Silicon Valley Volunteers to Education Projects
GOAL: Connecting Silicon Valley professionals to projects focused on improving the quality of education around the world.
CONNECTION: Through her project, Team 4Tech, Henry Crown Fellow Lila Ibrahim is working to improve the quality of education in developing countries by connecting technology professionals and solutions with innovative local non-profit organizations.
COLLABORATION: In her first foray into scaling her project, Lila leveraged the Aspen Global Leadership Network in East Africa to great effect. More than ten Kenyan Fellows stepped up to help Lila with her launch, including Stella Kilonzo, who organized a closing dinner and arranged for the attendance of several key regional companies, and Henry Crown Fellow Ann Mei Chang, who invited U.S. Embassy representatives.
In 2014, Team4Tech kicked off their work in India and South Africa, once again drawing upon the Aspen Global Leadership network for local support and connections. This year, again with the help of Central American Fellows, they are planning an expansion to Costa Rica. As Julie Clugage, Executive Director of Team4Tech explains, “These Aspen Fellows have helped us connect with local partners and get a better understanding of the local education and technology contexts.”
IMPACT: Over the past two years, 110 Team4Tech volunteers from tech companies including Box, Facebook, Google, Computer Sciences Corporation, Coursera, Intel, Intuit, and VMware participated in seven projects in Vietnam, India, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, and Cambodia, benefitting over 10,000 students and teachers.
