Since Tuesday, July 3, a significant wildfire has been burning in the Lake Christine region near Basalt (about 15-20 miles northwest of Aspen), leading to partial evacuations in that area and air traffic disruption in and out of the Aspen/Pitkin County airport.
Aspen Institute events have not been directly impacted and the Resnick Aspen Action Forum will take place next week. The Aspen Institute is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to evaluate and respond to conditions as they develop.
We are closely tracking flights in and out of Aspen and anticipate that conditions will continue to improve over the next few days. While some delays are expected over the weekend, we do not anticipate continued flight disruptions next week. We plan to send an update with more information later this weekend.
We strongly encourage you to review your travel plans this week with your airline carrier or travel agency. For those flying United, we also recommend downloading the United mobile app, as this will help you receive important alerts regarding your flights and any changes. At this time, United and Delta are running busses for diverted flights from Grand Junction to Aspen; American Airlines has yet to announce contingency travel plans. Please note that these options may change with conditions.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Deborah Murphy at 970-544-7955 or deborah.murphy@aspeninst.org.
Our concierge team will also be in Denver and Aspen starting July 23 to assist with any day-of flight problems and, if need be, with alternative travel arrangements, including ground transportation.
Should you need assistance or have any problems with your connection in Denver, our Denver airport concierge, Lori Gabow, will be at the United Airlines Aspen departure gate to assist. Her direct number is +1 (303) 913-6037. If you have shared your travel details with us, our Aspen airport concierge, Laurie Rosedale, will greet you at the Aspen airport upon arrival and, if needed, will help you locate your hotel shuttle. Laurie’s contact number is +1 (970) 948-1701.
Thank you for your continued patience and support – we look forward to seeing everyone at the 2018 Resnick Aspen Action Forum kicking off on Wednesday, July 25.
