Bio:
Juan Sebastian Chamorro is the Executive Director of FUNIDES, the leading economic think tank in Nicaragua. He represented the private sector in the National Dialogue, as a member of the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy. Chamorro previously served as the CEO of MACESA, a leading export company. From 2006 to 2011, Chamorro served as Executive Director of the Millennium Challenge Account in Nicaragua. Prior to the execution of the program, Chamorro was the government’s lead negotiator with the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which led to an approval of a US$175 million grant to Nicaragua. He served as Vice Minister of Finance (2006) and Technical Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic (2005), which is the Ministry in charge of national strategic planning. Dr. Chamorro worked in the process that resulted in the National Development Plan and was a key player in the government’s negotiations with the IMF resulting in Nicaragua’s acceptance into the HIPC debt reduction program.
On the academic front, Dr. Chamorro has taught Master and undergraduate-level courses in macro and microeconomics at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua and at Thomas More University in Managua. Dr. Chamorro earned his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of San Francisco (Magna Cum Laude) and has a Master’s in economics with a mention in social policies from Georgetown University. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he specialized in econometrics. His doctoral dissertation, extracts of which have been published in prestigious journals in the US, focused on the impact of weak property rights on the Nicaraguan economy. Juan Sebastian is a Fellow of the fourth class of the Central America Leadership Initiative and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
